Our Books
Snake River Press was founded in 2006 by Peter Bridgewater, in a move away from mass-market publishing and back to the integrity of thoughtful, well-made books. He plans to keep the Press local, creating enchanting titles on Sussex-based subjects.
Peter first came to Sussex as a design student in the early 1970s and has continued living and working in his adopted county ever since. He began his career as a book designer for art publishers Thames & Hudson before starting his own prestigious design consultancy in Brighton. In 1996 he co-founded The Ivy Press, a design-led publishing house that has established a well-earned international reputation for combining superb design with editorial integrity. Based in Lewes, The Ivy Press produces high-quality books that have been translated into more than 20 languages.
For Peter, Snake River Press is a way of combining his publishing skills with an enduring love of Sussex. He lives in the heart of some of the most exhilarating countryside in the county. A few miles away is Cuckmere Haven, a spectacular floodplain where the Cuckmere River snakes dramatically into the English Channel. This magical setting was the inspiration for Snake River Press, and you can see the distinctive landscape reflected in the logo.

Our ethos at Snake River Press is to share our love of Sussex with like-minded souls and trust that we find an enthusiastic audience. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about us and will be tempted to discover the unique quality of Snake River Press books for yourself.
